The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
