PSG Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired two times late to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the final moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing penalty victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
